Maddie and her son, Leo, received extraordinary care when they needed it most.
When Maddie was 20 weeks pregnant, she learned that her baby, Leo, had a rare and serious heart condition: transposition of the great arteries (TGA). His aorta and pulmonary artery were switched, causing oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood to circulate improperly.
Nearly three months later, Maddie was admitted with symptoms of preeclampsia. Soon after, Leo was born prematurely, and stayed in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) until his body was strong enough for his lifesaving heart surgery. At just two weeks old, Leo underwent open-heart surgery. Despite a successful procedure, he faced additional complications, including seizures, cardiac rhythm issues, and fluid buildup in his chest.
Through it all, the whole family received extraordinary support from their care team. Maddie shared, “There is nowhere else I would rather be than Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford… Every single nurse, physician, support staff, housekeeper, and technician has made a positive impact on us.”
